Dr. LaTonya GoffneyDr. LaTonya M. Goffney serves as the Superintendent of Schools for Aldine Independent School District. Since taking the helm in July 2018, Dr. Goffney has dedicated herself to the nearly 67,000 students and 9,000 employees of the district as well as the entire Aldine community.

Under her leadership, Aldine ISD has developed new initiatives to offer parents and students more options. In fall 2018, AISD rolled out a pre-kindergarten pilot for students who are three years old at several early childhood schools. Beginning in fall 2019, the district will offer a two-way dual language immersion program at five campuses. The Rose Avalos P-TECH campus will open in fall 2019, which will be yet another opportunity for high school students to earn a college degree and be career ready following graduation.

Throughout her tenure in education, Dr. Goffney has increased student achievement through a focus on literacy, targeted professional development for teachers, and collaboration across the community, including developing business and school partnerships, parent engagement and communication.

Dr. Goffney began her career as a language arts teacher in Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD. She went on to serve as assistant principal and principal before leading COCISD as superintendent. In 2013, she was selected as the Superintendent of Lufkin ISD. In this role, she created systems dedicated to supporting teachers through the development of an educator’s professional academy. She was also instrumental in establishing several community cooperatives, including the district’s first education foundation.

In recognition of her efforts, Dr. Goffney was named Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards in 2017. That same year, the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) selected her to be the Texas nominee for the 2018 American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year award.

Dr. Goffney believes in maximizing opportunities, developing leaders and providing opportunities for all students. As a result, she is involved in organizations such as the Texas School Alliance, the University Interscholastic League Legislative Committee, Texas Association of Black School Educators, Texas Council of Women School Executives, TASA Future-Ready Superintendents and many more. She advocates for her community as a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., the Mayor’s Advisory Council, and the Aldine Education Foundation.

A native of Coldspring, Texas, Dr. Goffney is a graduate of Sam Houston State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership. Her passion for education and stewardship is evident throughout Dr. Goffney’s career and even in her family. Her husband, Joseph, is an educator in a Houston area school district and serves as pastor of a church. The Goffneys are the parents of two children, Joslyn, and the late Joseph Jr. who passed away earlier this year.
